General Airline Overview/Information:
Northwest Airlines is an airline headquartered in Eagan, Minnesota in the United States of America. It is the fifth-largest U.S. airline. Northwest has three major hubs in the United States: Detroit Metropolitan Wayne County Airport, Minneapolis-Saint Paul International Airport, and Memphis International Airport. Northwest also operates flights from a hub in Asia at Narita International Airport near Tokyo and also operates transatlantic and Asian flights in cooperation with partner KLM from Schiphol Airport in Amsterdam.

Northwest is the world's fifth largest airline in terms of RPM (revenue-passenger-miles). In addition to operating one of the largest domestic route networks in the U.S., Northwest carries more passengers across the Pacific (5.1 million in 2004) than any other U.S. carrier, and carries more air cargo than any other passenger airline. The airline, along with its parent company and subsidiaries, is currently operating under Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection.

Customer Service agents were the rudest I've ever encountered at any airline. I was excited to ride on a DC-9, and the crew revived my trip. They were very friendly, everyone appeared to be having a great day. The cabin was very spacious, probably the widest I've ever seen in an aircraft with a single aisle. There was a generous amount of leg room, it seemed like there was more than on the 757s. I was surprised when I was given a full can of soda on flight under an hour in length. The crew then came around with a large box full of snacks, I selected a large bag of pretzels. I was shocked, this kind of service on such a short flight, while much longer flights I have been given nothing more than a drink poured into a cup.

This was a great flight, best I've ever had on NW, I couldn't have asked for more. The crew made my trip on the DC-9 memorable. However, I must state that this trip was inconsistent with every other I've had on NW. So don't expect much. But it goes to show that within every airline, there are those who go against the curve.

Very bad service. From the Gate Agents, to the Flight Attendants, to the Flight Crew, all NW employees involved in this flight seemed to be having a rough day. I got the emergency exit row, and I was somewhat surprised that the Flight Attendants didn't instruct us to to review the safety card as is standard practice. The pilot gave a very harsh sounding P/A announcement, something I have never heard in my life up until that point. It was a 4.5 hour flight, but all we got was one beverage service, and weren't able to keep the whole can. Not even a bag of trailmix was offered. I spent $5 on a snack box, which was the only option, and it did not contain nearly enough food for a flight of that duration.

Upon arrival in SFO, the crew did not so much as bid the passengers a good night, and instead just talked to each other in front of the cockpit. After a pleasant flight on NW from SDF, this flight again tarnished my opinion of the airline. I must say NW seems to have the worst customer service of any US carrier.

Aircraft: SAAB-SFC    Route of Flight: MSP - DBQ

On December 30, 2008, Northwest Airlines Flight 3161 from Minneapolis to Dubuque, IA was scheduled to depart at 1:30 P.M., however the airline monitors at the airport, as well as airline staff, indicated that the flight would be delayed until 2:50 P.M. The father of a family with three autistic sons arrived at the gate around 1:30 P.M. The gate agent told him that the rest of the family would have one minute to get there before the boarding door closed. When they arrived less than one minute later, she refused to let them board, stating that the plane had to leave now to avoid being late. Within the next two minutes, three more passengers, for a total of eight, arrived and begged for the jet bridge to be put back so they could board, but their entreaty was denied. Over 30 minutes later, the plane finally pushed-back. That service was truly outrageous and unacceptable.
